SPEECH BY HERR STRESEMANN
SATISFACTION IN FRANCE.
BKRiJN, Aug. 25. ' The Chancellor (Hen* Stresemann), ~in a speech, insisted that as long as the French pursue their present policy in -the ■ Rhineland and the Ruhr the way -will.be barred to any practical solution. iiliat Germany can accept. He dec-laved that the present Government adheres fully to Herr Cuno's memorandum of June 7, to -which, to -"their regret, no reply has been'receiv-ed'from-.the Allied Powers. He adthat the possibilities of Ger"many's economic forces were potentially good, and he asserted the Allies -need only accept the principles laid 'down in the memorandum in order to "find, in collaboration with Germany, a way of turning our. last remaining •source of strength into «.• real guarantee of 'Germany's fulfilment of her reparation obligations. He denied that Germany had delib--©ra-tely- depreciated her currency. The /'Govern me-nt was not afraid of the confiscation of property if necessary, but | lie hoped such a drastic step would; be j unnecessary. TTe would not discuss M. Poincare'R Note, but if the terms of the British "NVvte were carried out it Tfould be possible for the nations to live peaceably. Germany was ready to- make heavy sacrifices, even to pawning some of her industries, in cvr<!er to regain her free--0T"» but not tho "RliineTand and the Kunr. Germany was not desirous of
smashing the Entente, and wished to work in harmony with England and France.
PARIS, Aug. 25. M. Poincare left to-day to unveil monuments in the department of the Meus. It is expected he will answer Herr Stresemann, whose speech has given satisfaction in France.
Le Journal says the speech is not aggressive and shows a real desire for a solution of the reparations problem. Le Matin declares Herr Stresemann leaves the door wide open for conversations with the Allies, ami even with France.
