The Duke of Devonshire shook hands 3500 times when he welcomed tiie guests-to a garden party at Chats worth inaugurating the wedding festivities of his daughter, Lady Rachael Cavendish, whose marriage to the Hon. James Stuart will be celebrated to-day in a little church.within Chatsworth *Park.
Lady Rachael presented a charming picture, wearing a simple frock and a hat of periwinkle blue. Standing beside her fiancee, she shook hands with the guests until she was so tired that her sister took her place. Some very lovely gifts were open to inspection, including a blue emerald brooch with, the Royal cypher in, diamonds from the King and Queen. The visitors included farmers and small holders and their wives, -who viewed with amazement the treasures with which Ohatsworth had been endowed by successive owners.
j .Crowds from far and near gathered afc the tiny village of Edensor, Derbyshire, to witness the wedding of Lady Rachaol Cavendish. The roads were blocked by motor-cars and the population of the village was swoljen from 250- to 12,000. Many, of the guests were unable to reach the little chufclr in their cars,-and were obliged to walk. Two of the bridesmaids had to leave ■their car and walk a mile in their satin shoes. They found the bridal party awaiting their arrival. The bride's gown was of white chiffon, mounted over, crepe beaute, with a wide panel in front embroidered with tiny silver roses. A train of Nottingsham lace was .mounted over white chiffon, edged with silver .ribbon. The bride wore a tulle veil and a myrtle leaf wreath, and carried a spray of orange blossoms and myrtle. Two little boy pages attending the bride wore seagreen velvet with silk hose.
When the party left the church guns thundered a salute and the famous Ghatsforth fountains played, their high gleaming water being visible for six miles.
