ALL SAINTS' CHURCH, ELTHAM

SACRED RECITAL.

Last night the church organist, Miss Madden, and the members of the choir, assisted by local singers and a quartette from Hawera, gave a very successful recital. There was a very large congegation, the church being filled to the doors, and everyone present heartily appreciated the musical numbers given.. The recital was prefaced by a short service, part of Evensong being taken and Psalm 121 being sung. Miss Madden, the church ojganist, played as an overture' a very fine selection in which she snowed nice discrimination in the use of the stops. Her second number was two bracketed selections, two movements of the Sonata Pathetique and a well known chorus, and march from Tannhauser. Both these were very effectively played and displayed the utmost capabilities of the organ. Handel's Largo and one of the "lied Ohne Worte" (Mendelssohn) and the concluding voluntary Avere played by Mr. Page, wkile the offertory was played in good style by Mr. Edwards. Vocal solos were given in excellent style by several of Eltham's.best singers. Mrs. Hemingway sang "Angels Ever Bright and Fair," Miss Wilson "Lord to Thee ?S A"igb v and P ay'" Mrs- Drayton "The Soul's Awakening," Mrs Johnson "Vital Spark." Mr. E. E. Carter , 'Kemember now Thy Creator," Mr Carson "Hold Thou My Hand'," Mi\ Silver "Nazareth" All were listened to with keen interest. The quartette from Hawera—Mrs. Duffill, Mrs. Siiriderland, Messrs. Page and Liddington —contributed two numbers unaccom- < panied, "God so loved the world" (Crucifixion) and "Cast Thy Burden upon the Lord" (Elijah). In both the voices balanced and blended nicely, and the expression in. the second number was particularly good. The choir of All Saints' sang two anthems, "They have taken away my Lord" and "The Radiant Morn," and both were effectively sung. Most of the accompaniments were played in excellent taste by Miss Madden. After the Benediction the hymn "Abide with Me" was sung, and the service ended with the National- Anthem. Altogether the recital was a great success, and the choir funds will materially benefit from the 1 effort. ■The performers were afterward* entertained by the ladies in the schoolroom, and this was much appreciated by all. —— ■ i i
