5 A book that will cause great interest in political circles has just been published in London, entitled "HowLabour Governs," from the pen of Gordon Childe, who was secretary to the ■ .New South Wales Labour Premier the late Mr. John Storey, "The glorification of a few bosses'' is the ultimate aim of Labour in Australia, according to Mr. Childe. Socialism has been watered down in the Labour objective, he says, to avoid making political enemies. The strictly economic motive behind the White Australia policy has been obscured by racial prejudice. "The supposed alliances between Labour and certain financial interests have only come about,'' says Mr. Childe, "since Labour has been within close range of the Treasury benches, and any compacts that have been made have been negotiated, not with the Labour Conference or executive, but with the leaders of the Parliamentary party. The most easily demonstrable alliance formed by the Labour Party with the vested interests of a certain section of the capitalistic class is that with the liquor trade. The strongest circumstantial evidence points to an alliance" in Queensland—with Ryan, late darling of Labourites, as chief performer." ; The second volume, which, according Ito the London correspondent of the Daily Guardian, is not completed, promises to conclude the most important comprehensive study of Australian ; Labour that has been made, by any author. Mr. Childe graduated at Sydney • University with first-class honours m philosophy; also B.Litt. (Qxford) and Simcox Research Scholar (Oxford)
