PLIGHT OF REFUGEES
BY SABLE--PEESS aHSOOTATTOw—GO FLIGHT LONDON, July 17.
The Athens correspondent of the ■ Daily Express states that the condition I of the refugees in Greece is indescrib- , ably pitiable. Lack of food and contagious disease is killing them off, quickly. There are many cases of suicide, including the precentor of a ; Constantinople church, who was reduced [ to fulfilling the office of candle lighter j in Athens cathedral. The privation so preyed on his mind that he hanged himself from the bar under the canopy of the pulpit. The body was only discovered when the service commenced and the curtains were withdrawn from the pulpit to allow the priest to read the lesson. The congregation were horror-stricken.
