The friends of Mrs. J. F. Batey, of New Plymouth, and Mr. 0. J. Herrick, late of New Plymouth, will regret to hear that Mrs. Herrick, relict of -the late Joseph J. Herrick, passed away at Christchurch on Monday last —News.' !
A remarkable instance of longevity is disclosed by the reminiscences of Mrs. Ruben Short, who is only fourteen months short of her hundredth birthday. She landed in Wellington in 1841 from i^he sailer Lady Nugent. Mrs. Short's husband died last year at the age> of 94, and she still has a brother alive at 96. *
Dr. S. K. Datta, one of the mosjt distinguished of living Indian Christian leaders, is shortly to pay a visit of about six-weeks' duration to New Zealand; He is coming out under the auspices of the. Young "Men's Christian Association and the St«udent Christian movement. ,
Mr. Hector Dempsey was elected chairman of the Pukekura Park Board at the annual meeting: of the board .last night. A vote of appreciation was accorded the retiring, chairman (Mr. O. ]£. Bellriiiger) for the valuable services rendered during his six years' tenure of the office. Mr. Bellringer did not seek re-election. ..'.'.
Mr. A. O. Buchler, headmaster of the Terrace E«d School, Palmerston North, has received notice of his appointment to the headmastership of the Kaikorai School, the leading primary school i* Dunedib, and will leave for the south about the end of August to take up his new duties!. Mr. Buchler was formerly a teacher in the Tafranaki district, and was in charge of the Okaiawa- School. .
The death is reported from Feilding of Mr. Richard E. Pearce. The deceased, who landed at Wellington with his parents from England .when nine years of age, would have been ninety years old in November next. After arriving in the Dominion he lived with his parents at the Hutt, and about 1873 went to the Sanddn district, where he resided for a considerable time. About fourteen years ago he took up his residence in Feilding.
Miss Ta.it, infant mistress at the Tawhiti school, has resigned her ppsi-• tion, to take effect on July 31. The headmaster (Mr. Jackson), in his report to the committee last evening, expressed his appreciation of the splen- : did services Miss Tait had given during • the two and a half years she had been i on the staff. The secretary was asked to write, to Miss Tait a suitable letter in trecoignition of her serriees, and offering good wishes for her future. {
