PARAPARA ROAD.
NEED FOR COMPLETION
(BY TELEGRAPH — VRTRS ASSOCIATION.)
WANGANUI, July 16. An important conference was held this morning, when delegates from th» Waimarino and Wanganui districts met to discuss what measures should be taken to complete the Parapar'a Road-. The value- of the road was emphasised by all the speakers, and it was pointed out that only eleven miles required to be completed to bring Wanganui and Raetihr within about three hours distance of each other.
Wanganui, with a deep-sea harbour, which is practically an accomplished fact, is the natural outlet for the rich Waimarino district, and it was declared that the produce of that district could be put on board ship more cheaply at Wanganui than at any other port. The road, it was pointed out, was a national highway, by reason of the larsjo area which it would open up arid feed, and therefore should be completed by the Government.
It was resolved that the Parliamentary representatives of the district be asked to use every endeavour to have the road included in the schedule of main roads under the Highways Act. and that a deputation representative of all the local bodies present proceed to "Wellington to interview the Government on these matters. Great enthusiasm was manifested, and there was a general indication of determination to get completed a national work which has been hanging fire- for forty years.
