WHEAT GROWING.
FIXING PRICES. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) [' CHRISTCHURCH, July 11. Delegates from the principal centres in Canterbury discussed the question of wheat growing and of control of prices. It was generally agreed that the acreage in wheat was 5U per cent, below that of last season, and unless the prices were made remunerative enough to encourage spring sowing the Dominion would be faced with a shortage of wheat. The cost of production was stated to be 4s 6d to os per bushel, all charges having gone up fully 100 per cent. It was decided that the price be fixed at 6s f.o.b. It was also agreed to approach the Government, with a view of granting assistance to erect storage sheds, while ari effort is to be made to obtain a reduction,, in handling charges. It was further decided to ask the Government to place an embargo on Australian potatoes till the local price reached £10 a ton.
