MUSIC AND BUSINESS
"Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life, although the spirit be not- the master of that which it creates through music; yet it is blessed in this creation, which, like every creation of art, is mightier than the artist."
—Beethoven
Dr. Coward, of Sheffield, addressing the members of the Huddersfield Rotary Club on "Music and Its Relationship to Business and Everyday Life," said that a man's business was more likely to "go west" if he did not mix a little mnsie with it. What he meant by music was the well-ordered sounds of any instrument, from a mouth organ to a grand orchestra, from the voice of the individual to a great chorus. If they wished to get the benefit of their businesses of the subtle, stimulating, wit-sharpening, spiritrousing, nerve-soothing influence, all that he asked was that they should make music a part of their plan of life: to see that they got a certain amount of nature's pleasant, medicine every week by singing, humming, whistling, playing, or hearing music at home, either from members of the family, or by gramophone or pianola.
