Cuff, King a Y Thomas! •Apologies were received from Crs. i Campbell and Nairn, j A letter was received from Rev , Knowles Smith, hon. secretary of the Scout movement, requesting the use of the side room of the Town Hall for the trirl guides.—Permission wag granted free of cost. The secretary of the Taranaki Local bodies Association wrote notifying the Council of the meeting of the ".association to he held in the County Office on June 28.—The Mayor was annointed to represent the Council. ** — , The Council decided not to appoint a representative to the annual conference of the Municipal Association on account of same being held in Christchurcb. s Captain Nuttall, the Council's representative on the Fire Brigade, attended the meeting in connection with the recent fire and submitted a renort. He stated that the pressure was low and the two leads were insufficient to effectively deal with the fire considering the hold it had pot owing to the late call and the difficulty A finding the water plugs. He recommended the purchase of a Dennis engine pump, which would enable the pressure to he increased to 1501b per square inch. He considered that the water mains had become somewhat pitted up. which accounted for the low pressure. No blowout valves had ever" been fitted to the service. The Mayor considered nil the firemen, should know where the fire plugs were situated, and that there should he no delay in this direction. Captain Xuttall stated that there were 153 plugs, and it would he impossible to remember all of them. Cr. Carter asked re the four-inch mains in other towns, and considered there was bad management somewhere. Cr. Bridger stated that it was quite unfair to the Fire Brigade to endeavour to^cast all the responsibility on the brigade, which he mentioned was entirely voluntary. The Council should acept its share of the responsibility of seeing that the brigade should nave every facility for fire fighting. He suggested that a committee I>e set up . to investigate the whole trouble—three members of the Council and three members of the brigade, with the borough foreman. Cr. Clement moved in this direction, ■ aii^l it was carried. Cr. Clement moved that the Reserves Committee be empowered to plant 1000 hardwood gums on the cemetery reserves. O\ Carter seconded, and it was carried. , Cr. King moved that Cr. Carter he appointed deputy-mayor for the ensuing term.—Carried. Mr. George Rowe was appointed traffic inspector,- tax collector, borough ranger and poundkeeper at a salary of £3 per week. The borough tver^urer reported that the sum of £928 had been received during the month. ; Accounts amounting to £881 were passed for payment. The gasworks manager (Mr. W. S. Heyes) reported that the new holder was in use, and everything was quite satisfactory; 985,100 feet of gas had been made during the month. The abattoir manager reported that 393 head of stock had been slaughtered during the month, and that two oxen, two cows, and one pig had been condemned. . j The Finance Committee recommend- i ed: That authority be given the gasworks manager to purchase an auto- j inatio pressure recorder; that the council approves of the transfer of dwelling j erected for F. J. Bilton to Miss Flora Adelaide Taylor; that authority be given for the purchase of a new office ! typewriter; that all orders for materials j on behalf of the council be counter- j signed by the town clerk. The commit- ! • tee reported that his Worship the i Mayor had been appointed chairman for the ensuing term, and that a remit had been forwarded to the Municipal Can- ! ' ference requesting that the Local Bodies Finance Act be amended to extend the term for repayment of antecedent .liability out of revenue from seven to ten years. : The Town Hall and Pictures Com- '■ mittee reported that his Worship the ' Mayor had been appointed chairman ! for the ensuing term; that instructions had l)een given for refitting of electric wiring in the engine-room and biograph bos as required by the inspector of the .Fire Underwriters' Association at a [ cost of £32 2s; that arrangements had ' been made with the Paramount Company for a series of twelve weekly programmes. i The Works Committee recommended that Crlentworth and Raiiway Streets be closed against heavy traffic until the end of September, in accordance with clause 198 ofthe borough by-laws, «nd that public notice be g yen accordingly ; that the overseer be instructed to have fire plugs cleaned and painted white when the weather permits, and that the indicator posts be plainly marked with the distances of the plugs. The committee reported that Cr. Carter had been appointed chairman for the ensuing term, and that the matter of dealing/with the report re water filtration had been held over pending the rereipt of further information The Reserves and Cemetery Committee reported that Cr.
