HERD TESTING ASSOCIATIONS
A return issued in the New Zealand Journal of Agriculture for May shows that in the Dominion there are 137 associations for testing, of which 57 are controlled by the Dairy Division and 80 privately controlled. The number of cows represented in the factories which members of the associations supply totals 83,605, of which 34,558 are in the former category and 49,047 in the latter. Apparently testing has progressed but little in the South Island, for only 2134 cows are being tested out of the large total mentioned. Of the associations mentioned IS are in South Taranaki and 12 in North Taranaki. The C.O.R. list for March and April is published in the Agricultural Journal and makes interesting reading for dairy farmers. In the Jerseys 13 come from Taranaki, and of them three are from Mf. F. Hoskins farm at Matapu. The highest figures were put up by Mrs.-M. A. Gadsby's (Stratford) Lady Quickstep, mature class, which put up 701.30 lbs of fat in 365 days. This cow is over ten years old. J. S. Jones, of Bell Block, had the next best figures with a mature cow (five years), which gave 666.02 lbs. of fat. Two others had over 600 lbs. In the Friesians, G. A. Marehant and Rons (Cardiff) hnd one entered, Nrizli Fegis 'de Kol. which cave 576.25 lbs of fat. The highest figure was reached V>v a mature, cow from Kaum, R22.67 lbs. Two others were over 800 lbs.
