THE "SOCCER" GAME.
(By Kick Off.) Hawera have had to make many changes in their team this season vwing j to players leaving tiie district, and on Monday last there were five players that have joined the ;'lub recently. All played well, and atu>r a few games to--. i gether Hawera should have a,s good a team as ever. ' The many friends of Tom Howa, rth will regret to hear that he has decided to make his home in Auckland, and has signed on for the 'Brotherhood team. V\ c wish him the best of luck. Jieare is getting into form now, and on Monday's performance should make j ! a good partner for Jones on his return from the Association tour. Campbell is a. distinct acquisition to j the forward line, and his first shot at j goal in Monday's match would have scored but for Healey's failure to be' ready at the right moment. | The Marton indies have played their first game of Soccer at Marton. Report says hunt it was a good game to watc-li. 1 The. I)aweni Juniors journed to "\Vai nganui on Monday and were defated by . 4 —o by the Wanganui Junior reps, j Why not a challenge from Taranaki :to the winners ? .' New Plymouth have decided after due consideration to pull out of the Julian can competition. It is perhaps j for the best interests of the game, for ' to fulfil their fixtures would have meant travelling- in the aggregate somewhere about 550 miles, their nearest- opponents being Stratford, a distance of 30 miles. However, with the number of Home boats that call at New Plymouth now they will get plenty of games, and I believe Waitara are thinking of starting a team again. ~\\ aitara won the j Julian cup in lWio, but in later years ■ the game has not been played there. I Latest advices from \\ ellington state ' that the Chinese team that is expected i to tour Australasia will only play six * matches in New Zealand, so it is doubt- ! ful if Taranaki will get a game, even ' Lif the tour eventuates. j I Wanganui have challenged Auckland for the Biown Shield, and I understand the game will be played in Wanganui j next month. The last time-Wanganui i played fo.r the Brown Shield was iv J 1921, when a crowd of nearly 4000 witj nessed the defeat of Wanganui, 3—l, in Cook's Gardens. Writing from Sydney, on May 27, Ponty Jones has the following interesting particulars about the tour in Australia : "I only have two matches io report in. which I was not chosen to play. When lam chosen to play you may depend I'll do my best to secure myself a position in at least one test; frame. Thursday last we played at Granville, and our boys had ziot lo.st their sea-legs after our rough trip across. It was reported to bo the roughest trip the Marama has had for over 30 years. The last night of the trip was the worst of all, not one of our team getting any sleep at all. So you may guess our condition, turning out only two days afterwards. The soccer enthusiasts her© are very in- ' terested in us, in so far as playing is concerned, but mark my words, that is as far a,s it goe-s. We have been staying here in Sydney nearly a week now, and not one of the Aussie players that came over to New Zealand last' year has been to see us'yet. That game at Granville we lost 3 goals to 1. I Yesterday the game Avas a draw. I won't say anything about either game, ' but I'm thinking a terrible lot, though. The referee seemed to be against the New Zealand team in both games. ' Give my good wishes to the Hawera. team in their match on June 4. I'd like to be there. I hope they hold their own. Kindly give my kind regards to all the footballers." i
