IMPERIAL HONOURS.

OPPOSED IN QUEENSLAND;

The Queensland Labour movement, if it had its own way, would abolish altogether the offioe of State Governor! .'tite constitution stands in the way, however. ; However, the movement has decided on what it considers the next best thing by making as a new plank of the Labour platform the abolition of the system of Imperially-appdinted Governors, who, it insists, shall, instead, be appointed on th© nomination of the Stat© Government.

This was agreed to at th© recent State Labour Conference at Rockhampton. One delegate wanted to "go the whole hog," and moved for the aooiition of the office. On the advice of th© Premier (Mr. Theodore), however, this was. not carried out. Mr. Theodore pointed out that it was impossible of achievement. In the present circuriistanoea there was no power in Queensland to do it. If they passed -an Act to-day it would hay© to be reserved for the.; assent of the. Imp©rial authorities. H© had taken up the question with th© Imperial authorities in 1920, and had been informed that -whenever the Australian States decided on choosing'local Governors, thelmperial authorities would agree to. it. At; present, they had, th© following; alternativ©s: •. They could : .appoint - im-perially-appointed Governors - or a Governor-General;; '•:': All the Labour movement,hbped to achieve was to get someone chosen on: tlie nomination ;.of

the State Government, who would act on tho advice of 'local Ministers^ and^would act : as a channel di eoirihnumcafion between thercuand the Imperial authorities. A further plank was adopted, on the motion of the Premier, that there be no further granting to Queenslanders of Imperial honours, more . especially those which confer titles upon the recipients.
