From a good start Roe Bell was first out in front, with Lady Nan aulength further back. After half a mile had been covered Lady Nan went to the front, with Roe Bell, Rose Bingen and Rio Grande in that order. Rose Bingen went into second place when a mile and a half had been covered, and immediately after Roe Bell broke and lost about four lengths, although she still ran third. Lady Nan was first to turn for home, although Rose Bingen was in close attendance. When about 15yds from the post Rose Bingen broke and passed Lady Nan, who broke almost on the post. There was some demonstration at the judge's decision, but the rules provide that a horse breaking on the post is entitled to the same treatment as anywhere else on the track", so long as the driver does his utmost to bring the animal back into his stride. In this case the stewards decided that both riders had tried to check their horses, and therefore the judge's decision of-first past the box held good. Rose Bingen Won by a neck, Roe Bell being several lengths away third. Time ' 5.12-5, - ; - . . ' : . V- '■ ELTHAM' HANDICAP (saddle), of 250 soys; second horse 30 soys, third horse 20 soys. One mile.
