ATHLETICS.
DUNEDIN, April 2. Tlie ..championship athletic meeting, which forms part of the inter-Univer-sity tournament, was held to-day, and proved very successful. Otago UiMwrsity retained the challenge shield wfi'a 17 points, Canterbury being next with 9, Wellington 7, arid Auckland 6. Otago certainly owes its position in no small part to A. E. Porritt, who put up tUe fine performance of winning four events —120 yards hurdles, long jump, 220 yards, arid 100 yards. Porritt w?astße holder of the 100 yards championship, and he lowered his time for that distance by onefifth of a second, equalling the University record of lOsec, made by R. L. Christie, of Otago University, ih 1914. Ifhe local University's position was also strengthened by Kingston, who won both the hammer throwing and the shot putting. In the longer distance field events the -. wind told a tale, and the times were riot up to past performances-. W Tebber, who retained the three mile championship for Auckland, took 16min 28sec., as against his 15min. 31sec. . last year. I There was more than the usual in- ' terest in the 440 yards hurdles by reason of the fact that the New Zealand champion, J. W.' Calder, of Christchurch, was a competitor. His record time; is oB 4-ssec,, and lie took 64sec. to win the events ■'.-.-!
