WAIKATO MARKET REPORT.
The Farmers" Co-op. Auctioneering Company, Hamilton, report: I Beef is fairly steady, with a tendency to improve m though exporters still seem disinclined to assist much towards that end. . ,7 ■ I Mutton. —The markets are well sup- ' plied, and competition rules fairly i i steady. Ewes predominate largely, ' lines of good mutton being difficult to procure. ! Store y cattle.—Conieptitioh. is still dull, but there is no certainty that dullness will, long continue. Grown steers ! are not in keen demand, but there is a fair irjj^.-y; for yearlings and two-year-olds. In-calf heifers are firming steadily, and better yard ings of this class will no doubt shortly be witnessed. Calves. of both sexes are m moderate demand, well-bred Jersey heifers being most popular. j Store sheep.—^-Breeding ewes still continue to 3 attract notice, especially in the back districts. Most of the lowland graziers have filled requirements, and in consequence some of the central, yards have experienced a-'slight'falling-'1 off. Wethers draw good competition wherever offered, also lambs, both rape ; and stores; | Pigs.—Excepting occasional fluctuations, there is not much of consequence to report. The advance in export quotations must cast its reflection on yard ! sales, although' present: export; values have been realised in the yards for some j time past. 7;. ■/'•-...'■■ I Horses. —There is a good inquiry for heavy draught animals, and the autumn I fairs should bring good results. The approximate aggregate of rates to be collected during the year was £29,500, plus about £3000 in loan rates. Of that total of roughly £32,500, nearly one-quarter, £76757 was- paid to the county treasurer during the. last six days of February, arid that included some £700 of rates in arrears from previous years. The daily bankings of rate moneys for the final five days were as follows—£9lß,76Boo, £2200.3. £2700, and £1057, which clearly^showed that some settlers were anxious to avail themselves to the eleventh hour of the period of grace allowed.
