THE JOURNAL OF, AGRICULTURE,
In the current February issue of the 1 New Zealand Journal 'of Agriculture appears an interesting illustrated article on modern seed-testing, and describing the official seed station operated by the Department of' Agriculture at Wellington. The article is written "from the inside" by the officer-in-charge, Mr N. R. Foy, and thus gives many intimate, points of information. Farmers and others will have their attention arrested by an article on the rabbit pest by Mr D. Munro, one of the Department's stock inspectors with 30 years' experience in rabbit campaigning. The extraordinary fecundity and potential increase of the rabbit is strikingly presented, and the matter of migration of the pest is also dealt with. The Department's re-grassing experiments on the depleted pastoral country. of Central Otago, conducted by Dr L. Cockayne, form the subject of a report by a special committee of runholders, whose comments are of much practical interest and decidedly encouraging. A, helpful article, on tomato diseases, with special reference to "black stripe," which' has been very troublesome in certain important districts this season, .is contributed by the veteran horticulturist, Mr "W. H. Taylor. Mr B. C. Aston, the Department's chemist, resumes hisuseries of the poisonous, suspected, and medicinal plants of New Zealand. Other matter includes ar- .'. tieles on 3 digestive disorders* of cattle,' ■3hcmey 3 ahdv \atmospherie 3 moisture, ' cow testing,, liming- and : manuriai trials with rape. at Martinborough, the ilieuf curl, bladder plum and cherry curl fungous diseases of .fruit tree 3, and the usual seasonal notes, '.answers to 'inquiries -\veather records, etc. ■'
