SWIMMING CARNIVAL.
A SUCCESSFUL" FUNCTION
The first swimming carnival run by the South Taranaki Returned Soldiers' Association, under the auspices of th© Hawera Swimming Club, was held in the baths last night. Despite the somewhat chiily weather every available eeat was occupied and there were a large number of competitors in all the events. The temperature of the air was. registered at 60 degrees and that of the water at 66 degrees. The takings at the door and the entry fees amounted in all to £25 4s.
The Hawera Citizens Band was in attendance and provided an appreciated musical programme. Music transmitted by wireless also made a unique addition to the programme. Details of the events were as follow : — 25 Yards Boys' Handicap,.under 12.— J. McLean (3see) 1, W. Dymond (Isec) 2. Time, 20 2-5 sees.
25 Yards' Girls' Handicap.—W. Brant (scr) 1, D. King (Bsec) 2. Time, 29secs.
50 Yards Handicap, R.S.A.—W Dolan (Bsec) 1, W. Morrissey (9sec) 2 Time, 38sec.
75 Yards Boys' Handicap.—B. Rowson (scr) 1, C. Dowdle (scr) 2. Time, lmin Isec.
50 Yards Ladies' Handicap.—Miss Beamish 1, Miss Hart (lOsec) 2. Time, 49 2-5 sec.
Corfu Dive.—A. D. Powdrell 1. Powdrell was the only successful competitor at the 20 yards distance. 100 Yards Men's Handicap.—X. Syme (ssec) 1, F. Ryan (7sec) 2, L, S. Poison (scr) 3. Time, Imm 12 4-5 sec. The finish of the final was close. Syme just beat Ryan by inches. Ladies' Dive.—Miss M. Powdrell 1, Miss K. McCalman 2.
The'diving was not of such a high order as that witnessed at the last carnival. Nevertheless, Misses Powdrell, Taylor and McCalman put up creditable performances.
75 Yards' Men's Handicap.—H Honeyfield 1. F. Ryan (6seo) 2, F, Grant (Isec) 3.
Honeyfield won on the touch after making strenuous efforts.
Most Awkward Entry off Chute.—T, Jarvie 1, Miss Hart 2.
Men's* Dive.—G. Powdrell 1, B Higgs 2.
All G. PowdrelFs dives were good, tmt Higgs Tost points off the low Board. There were eight teams in the relay race, which was watched with interest. The Rovers (B ; Mundy, C. Dowdle, K. Syme and B. Rawson) won by a narrow margin from the Hot Spots (L. S. Poison. B. Higgs, T. Jarvie and G. Powdrell).
