The Australasian's swimming writer says of Charltou's wonderful performance in beating Harris: Alan Charlton, the boy prodigy of Sydney, achieved another triumph when he beat William Harris, the American champion, in a 440 yards champion race at the Domain Baths. Thousands of people crowded the baths to witness the race. Charlton won by 15 yards, and his time was 5m in 22 2-ssec. Owing to the slow paces in the early stages of the race Charlton did not establish a new record, as was expected. Harris' time was smin 37 4-ssee. The world's record is Jjinin 13 3-osec. When Harris saw Charlton swim on the previous week, he admitted that he had no hope of competing successfully against the Manly lad in the 440 yards event Harris only beat N. Christie for sec ond place by a tom-h. In his celebrate*.! SSO yarn's swim, in which he established a world's record, Charlton was timed over intermediate distances.
