A LOTTERY
BUSINESS MANAGER CONVICTED

AUCKLAND, Feb. 2
A fine of £25 was imposed on Ernest Williams, manager for the Direct Supplies Company, who appeared at the Police Court on three charges of managing a lottery. It was stated that the system was founded upon a contract by which goods were sold on a time payment ""Basis, with an intimation that from among the customers one person each would be selected to •obtain 90s worth of goods free. The defence was that the selection was made by merit and not chance-, as defendant chose a person ho thought would be the best advertising medium.
A conviction was recorded in one instance and decision on the other two charges was reserved.
