CHRISTMAS TRACE.
GOOD BUSINESS AT HAWERA. Businesses in Hawera are settling down to a good year's work, after experiencing a record Christmas trade. Everywhere an optimistic note is sounded. Statements such as "We haven't had such a Christmas for years!" a<re common, while the general belief is that provided the shopkeepers have the goods, the freer circulation of money and present lower prices will attract a steady trade. The proprietor of a hardware business told a Star reporter that from the time his premises opened on Mondaj morning of Christmas week until closiaip time at Saturday evening, his stafl were working haird attending to the wants of customers. In fact, if thej could have kept open later on Christmas Eve more business would have resulted. Although all the businesses did we! at Christmas, there was nothing extraordinary about the New Year trade However, it was considered satisfactory, and by no means worse than re cent years.
