It will be of interest to mention that there were twelve checking stations, three of which were secret—Urenui, Pio Pio, and Stratford. There were two classes—light and heavy. Nineteen started and 15 finished, two alone during the whole journey opening their 100 l bags, G-abbie having a "clean sheet, Claringbold losing only two points, Ford four, and Good "and Gibson five each for condition of cycle. Points were taken off for time and tools. On Taumatamaire there was an observer for climbing. The record put up by the machines is remarkably good, and a great tribute to their mechanism. The committee and all who assisted are entitled to the highest credit for the excellent arrangements. They will now have to look further afield for an ■adequate test for the machines.
