POLITICAL NOTES.

GENERAL ELECTION

(By Telegraph—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 27. The familiar question about the prob. able date of the general election was put by Mr. Mitchell to-day. The Pre- '' mier'-s retort was: It seems a very easy question to put, but not an easy one to answer. Will the hon. gentleman, asked Mr. Massey in return, tell me when the session is going to end ? He added that on the last day of the session he would be able. to indicate the date of the election. If the session ended on Monday he thought the election could be held on Thursday, December 7. There was a general chorus of comment, country members declaring that the date was. too early, while city members complacently remarked that it would suit them well. Mr. Holland referred to the promise of the Premier that he would endeavour to give five weeks for the campaign, but it looked, he said, as if they will only get four weeks. Members: Plenty of time. Mr. Holland: Make it December 14. Chorus of members: No, no. MR. ISITT A LIBERAL. -_ A statement made at a Nelson political meeting that Mr. Isitt had definitely dissociated himself from the Liberal Party caused that member to make a statement in the House to-day. He said: "I contradict that statement; I am still a staunch member of the Liberal Party under Mr. Wilford's leadership." NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL.

The Premier gave his personal views on the character of New Zealand's war memorial in the House to-day when he, was asked if the project had been forgotten by the Government. He contradicted the suggestion that the matter had been overlooked, stating that it had to be put aside when the financial depression came along. It | would, however, be considered by Cabinet immediately finances improved. His own idea, which' had not been submitted to his colleagues, was that asthe Parliament buildings had been to a certain extent completed he could carry his mind forward to the time when the whole of the building would be erected, including the nronosed cen tral dome. It would then be a building worthy of the Dominion. What had occurred to him was that they might have one or two triumphal arches erected as war memorials at the principal gates leading to Parliament buildings..
