He scorei freely till brilliantly caught by Mc Carthy. Barker hit at everything, an< quickly ran into double figures, an< when 16, in which was a sixer, Perm; held a catch from a mishit... Jarvis, fo Excelsior, began the innings in god style, and was going well till he skie "'jspae, which Plank got under and held
Penny was unfortunately run out when he was just beginning to score well and looked set. Mills was the only other who looked like staying, but he put one up which Nichol held, and the innings closed 31 behind their opponents. With an hour to go, Midlands went in again, and McCarthy showed that he j has lost little of his pristine cunning, I for he quickly secured seven wickets for 12, and only' Grindlay got double figures., The innings closed at 5.50 p.m., and with only ton minutes to go Excelsior's hopes of an eleventh hour victory were gone. Midlands are to be congratulated on their win. In Brodie they have a useful acquisition, both to. their batting and bowling strength. Their match with Manaia will be looked forward to with interest. Excelsior, who play Stratford next, should he able to give a good account of themselves.
