The annual meeting of the Hawera Amateur Swimming Club was held m the Borough Council Chambers last evening, when Dr. Young presided over a good attendance. Dr. Young apologised for the absence of the president, Dr. W. M. Thomson, who was indisposed as the- result of a slight accident. ; 1 The auditor, Mr. H. B. Burdekin, drew attention to . the f act £hat the secretary had been allowed to pay out of his own pocket certain expenses incurred by the club.—The matter was dealt with later in the evening, when Mr. Whittington was voted an honor-. 1 arium of .10 guineas and! Miss Bryant 6 guineas. Dr. Young Avas called away at this stage and Mr. A. ELean took the chair. The town clerk wrote informing the club that at a recent meeting of the Borough Council it had been decided that arrangements with the club in regard to swimming carnivals be- on a cash, percentage basis of 20-80 on gross takings. It was pointed out that the club was losing money each year and that evidently the borough councillors were not all aware of the expenses attached to the running of a carnival. Mr. Kean was of the opinion that if the council's terms were forced on the club the club would not be able to carry on. Mr. Whittington moved, and Mr Podeii seconded, that the club do not comply with the Borough Council's demand. Mr. 'Mahoney urged that the club endeavour to come to some satisfactory arrangement with the. council, and to that end he ijjoved as an amendment that a deputation wait on the council and point out that the levy proposed by them is too heavy for the club's finances and endeavour to come to some satisfactory agreement. The amendment was carried, and after being put as a motion, Mr. Spragg moved as aja amendment that the Borough Council be informed that the club will agree to run two carnivals for the.council as last year, but cannot agree to the demand for 20 per cent of the gross takings of all carnivals. 1 The amendment was carried., but on being put as a motion a further amend- j i ment, that a deputation wait on the i council and nothing further be done until the deputation have dealt with the matter, was carried. i The amendment was then put as a motion and carried. • | Mr. Spragg moved and Mr. Foden seconded that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee not to ', accede to the Borough Council's demand t for 20 per cent, of the gross takings of the carnivals.—Carried. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as. follows : Patrons, Messrs. E. Dixon, M.P., and R. H. Leece; presi- . dent, Dr. W. M. Thomson; vice-presi- ! dents, Mesdames Higgs, B. L. Joll, W. j J. Bright, L. 0. fHooker, Miss D. R. i Bryant, Dr. Young, and Messrs Brun- ! ette, W. J. Bright, P. Mullen, and J. jG. B. Stratton, Dymond, j Misses Machin and Campbell, and (Messrs Whittington, Kean, Foote, A. Powdrell, and Captain Bremner. The annual report for the season 1921-22, which was adopted, was. as follows: — . * "The club held five carnivals during the season, and, whilst not so well attended as last year—owing chiefly to unfavourable weather—they were all a marked success. Two carnivals were also held in aid of the baths improvement fund, and the proceeds were handed to the Borough Council. "The club is indebted to many donors of trophies and donations, the Hawera Star for press reports and notes of the carnivals, Mr. Matthews for attending
