QUEEN CARNIVAL BALANCE SHEET.

I (To the Editor.) | Sir, —In reply to the letter on the above subject over the name of Ghas. J. Uumming, which appeared in Saturday's Star, i must say how grateful 1 am to the writer for having gone to the trouble to write half a column to prove my figures to be correct. '" He tries to snow that my figuring is hard to follow. Now, sir, wny shoulu your correspondent "J. \V. H." go to the chairman of committee for his facts? Does he keep the books? 1 contend he received his information through the proper channels. Among other things, Mr. Cummings says my statement showed the income as £1888 7s 2d, not £1884 13s 2d, but he forgets to say that at his suggestion I deleted the following iuems: Change £2 Os 6d, refunds 7s (3<i and 6s, and change to JVir. Bullock £1; total £3 14s. This gives us the £1884 13s 2d which, was the amount presented to the committee. Further, he seems to be in an absolute fog over the income from the Opera house concert. Yet the very first items in the books he had to audit shows: Cash, taken at door £13 12s, tickets sold £18 12s 6d; total £32 4s 6d. What simpler does he want? He also says that we paid accounts on behalf of candidates amounting to £44 2s 6d. These figures are not correct. The total amount paid for subcommittees was £39 Os sd. in connection with, the gala days and crowning ceremonies the expenditure was as follows: £74 IBs 9d, £65 5s 7d, and £94 5s Bd. How do these compare ' with those set out by Mr. Cummings? No, sir, without farther ado I wish to ask the auditor if he is prepared to | say that the gross income was less than £1884 13s 2d, or if our gross expendii ture was less than £326 12s 2d? My next move will depend on his answer. In conclusion I wish to point out that ! Mr-Cummings attaches much importance . to the minutes of the committee in this ' matter. By the way, can Mr Cummings j tell me where to find the minute authorising him to take it upon himself to I prepare a balance sheet? There is one appointing him auditor only. I will not i waste your space further, sir. Thanking you for inserting this.—l am, etc., CHAS..H. BEOUGH. [We can give no further space to this dispute. Perhaps it could be settled , most satisfactorily by displaying the i two documents on some window in town. We have found it necessary to 1 delete a few lines from Mr. Brough's , letter.—Ed]
