A LAUDABLE EFFORT.

. ;. —v ♦ — ..-..;.. .■■■ - FOR A WORTHY CAUSE. (Contributed.) No doubt there .are but few who are not aware of the great work which is being done in connection with Dr. Barnardo's, Homes, and peopie*generally cheerfully embrace every opportunity of contributing something to a cause so worthy. One had often heard of the good work that is done year by year by Mrs.'Batten, of.-Tokaora, in, providing toys | for vthe children, who are inmates of homes. Following on an invitation to view at consignment of toys, now ready to be dispatched, to reach the homes in time for Christmas, a friend sa y S: —"The room presented somewhat of the. appearance of a toyshop, tliere being1 hundreds of dolls, rabbits, elephants, cats, strings of beads, bags of marbles, and many other things which my memory does not recall. Many of the, dolls were resurrected—old dolls reconditioned and redressed —others were maile of cloth suitable stuffed, and many of the animals were similarly made. The beads, too, were made 'entirely on the premises' from strips of coloured, paper rolled and gummed, and I threaded upon strings. Others were made of shells interspersed with short pieces of macaroni stained with tincture of iodine. The vast array presented a very pleasing appearance, and one which would have rejoiced the heart of the children of even this favoured land. One may well imagine, then, what pleasure they will give to those little waifs who have never yet been the owners of a solitary thing. There must be 'many children in , this town who have toys which,--sj.hough quite serviceable, are of Ino further use to them, Here, is an I opportunity for them to do something for a worthy cause, and they may be quite sure that anything handed to Mrs. Batten will te gratefully, received and duly dispatched. The shipping companies convey these boxes of toys free of charge."
