QUEEN CARNIVAL BALANCE. SHEET.

To the Editor. Sir, —I awaited the letter from Mr. C. Brough. of which that of J.W.H.. was a sure precursor, before making any statement on the above matter. Had J.W.H. gone to the chairman of the School ©arnival Committee, mii stead of to the person who first sup- ■ plied him with figures, and then answered his letter, a fully detailed statement of accounts would have been gladly shown him. This statement includes three accounts—viz gala days, October 24-25, 1921, account; gala day, November 23rd, 1921, account, and crowning ceremony day account, from which net balances were .brought forward to the balance-sheet These accounts show' respectively £28 Os 3d, £3Q 5s 3d, ancl 17s expenditure, making a total of £59 2s 6d. If, to this amount, one adds the sum of £20 (shown as received for advertising and taken off the cost of printing voting tickets) and that of £44 2s 6d (amounts paid by the committee on behalf of candidates after conclusion of the carnival, and deducted from the total paid , in by those candidates, in accordance with a minute passed by the committee to the effect that each candidate's committee should bear its own ex- ' penses), we have a sum of £123 5s to add to the total as shown in the published balance-sheet. This gives a total of £1885 2s Bd. \ Then take the following items: £2 os, 6d, for which a cheque was given in exchange;.7s 6d and 65,. amounts refunded by candidate's committees against payments made on their behalf by the executive committee; 3s 6d, amount overpaid treasurer on account of concert; discount allowed by the Star (6s 6d), less cartage paid out of pocket (3s 6d), 3s; and 4s, being the difference betwetif the, amount paid by the Secretary to the treasurer on account of concert, £32 0s 6d. and amount shown in his balance-sheet, £32 4s 6d^ and we arrive at the ..income as shown by Mr Brough's balance-sheet, viz., £1888 7s 2d not £1884 13s 2d 3 as put forward m his letter. According to his balance-sheet the expenses were £343 14s 2d, less discount ,Eltham Pipe Band"£s, Hawera Star £8 Bs—£33o 6s SToro V^a}** 3* pa^ k shows that ±.180y 4s 4d wag paid in, so once again Mr. rough's figures do not tally. From the above one can judge that" I would hardly state. Mr. Brough's figures to be correct. What I did state was that the sums paid to the respective school committees were correct, inasmuch as they represented the, total amount which had been obtained by the;efforts of the committee and that his figures there were correct. Mr.. Brough, how could I check the figures in a book ™ So? 0? carry in y°ur Pocket showing &6£ 4s 6d as the gross proceeds of the concert, againstjhe payments of **m us od. which you mad* to th* ' treasurer?
