BACK-HANDED COMPLIMENT.
Mr. J. S. Sargent, R.A., the wellknown portrait painter, is responsible for the following little tit-bit. Two men chanced'to be sitting opposite one another in the tube. Presently one took out a notebook and proceeded to make a sketch of the other. , When he had completed it and returned the book to his pocket, his victim, gratified by the attention, leaned forward and said: "You are an artist, I perceive, sir." "No," replied the other, "not exactly an artist. I design door knockers."
