PATEA BASKET-BALL TOURNAMENT.
— (By one of the girls.) AN EXCITING AFTERNOON. On Saturday last, teams from Whenuakura, Alton, Kakaramea, Patea (2) and Waverley (2), met to contest with each other at the Patea School grounds. The weathejr was most favourable, and the teams were in good form. The following were the results of various games:— First Round: Patea A beat Waverley A by 4 to 0; Waverley B beat WhentTakura by 2 to 0; Patea B was beaten by Alton by 10 to 0. Semi-final: Patea A beat Waverle? B by 12 to 0. Final: Patea A beat A Uon by 1 to 0. The winning team (Patea) was as follows: Frances Home (capt.), Diana Roberts, Ren© Laing, Rene Bams-
bottom, Vera, Sheild, P. Williams, H Smith, H. Papps and S. Evans (goalthrower).
Alton team (runner-up) was composed of the following girls: A. Wytkin (capt.), J. Wytkin, E. Taylor, L. Sutherland, A. Walker, E. Walker E. Robins, T. Robins, and V. Gordon. All the games were most exciting, but the final was a game worth men* tioning. The play was first in Patea's "den,' and then passed to that of Alton, but was stopped by an onslaught by T. Home. The ball was then thrown to the Patea "den," and S Evans proved her ability as goalthrower by scoring two goals (4) by half-time. Hazel Papps also proved her skill by scoring a free throw (1). Patea were then leading by 5 points to nil. ■
On resuming the game, the Patea girls attacked strongly and Sadie Evans was not long in scoring her third goal, followed shortly by a fourth from Hazel Papps, the game, after another 4 or 5 minutes' play ending in favour of Patea by 11 points to nil. At the conclusion of the tournament the members of the winning team were each presented with » handsome butterfly brooch, the gift of Mr. C. M. Stroutts. The presentation was made by Mrs. Stroutts, who congratulated the winners, and also the other teams on the fine performance put up by them.
Mr. Hemingway, chairnxan of the committee, thanked Mr. and Mrs. Stroutts for the prizes, and then reminded the public of the wonderful work Mr. Stroutts always did in any effort to raise funds for the town or its 'institutions. Mr. Hemingway then called for three cheers for Mr and Mrs. Stroutts, which "were heartl "y given.
Mrs. Stroutts then called for three cheers for the referees, Misses P. Matthews, R. Honeyfield, and Miss Walker.
Many^ parents watched the games with interest, and are looking forward to another tournament.
