A party of irregulars attempted to Ambush Free Staters in the hills in Mayo. The latter were at a. disadvantage numerically, but maintained a ;three hours' fire, when they got to close •quarters, used bombs, and routed the ienemy. A number of prisoners were -captured with expanding bullets i>if jfcheir possession. There was a. fierce encounter at Castlebar, where 40 irregulars attacked barracks in which Free Staters were staying. Reinforcements arrived, and iafter an hour's fighting they surrounded the rebels, who lost the whole of their equipment. Eight prisoners were itaken
