SOLDIERS' GRIEVANCE.
AGAINST CERTAIN APPOINTMENTS (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 1. The Returned Soldiers' Association complained to the Prime Minister that a number of soldiers who applied for positions as mesengers, etc., duringthe session were refused, while amongtKose employed were a number of civil /servants drawing supSranuation pay up to £213 per annum. In reply, Mr. Massey said that some experienced men were required, and it was usual to. reappoint the best of them, but of 45 appointments 28 were soldiers. The staff had been reduced this year, and there were not so many vacancies as usual. The association was not satisfied and strongly objected to men drawing superannuation being preferred to soldiers. The latter had young famil'es, and the other men were old and Tiad only a wife. They "failed to ~En3 any reason or excuse for their retention," and called on Mr. Massey to replace them by those who have not sufficient to live on.
