TARIFF AGREEMENT.

trade with Australia

WELLINGTON, July 28. Following is a precis of the tariff agreement with Australia: — pause 1 provides that the new duties take effect after, both countries have ratified the same and to remain in force until six months' notice of the termination of the agreement is giveii. Clause 4 saves the right of either country to impose suspended, deferred or dumping duties to "meet abnormal trading conditions. Clauses 7 and,B provide that goods of British origin transhipped or reexported from either country shall be admitted under British preferential tariffs of both countries. These clauses have already been brought into operation as from May 1. Clause 10 provides that no rebate or bounty shall be granted by either country on sugar contained in any goods exported to New Zealand, or to Australia, as the case may be. EXPORTS TO AUSTRALIA. The main items on which New Zealand produce has been reduced on entry to Australia are the following : j Bacon and hams, from 4d"per lb to j 2d per lb. j Butte* and cheese, from 3d per lb to ' 2d per lb. Fish, smoked or dried, but not salted irom per lb to free. ' Fish (n.e.i.), including fresh and salted, 6s per cwt. to free. Fish (canned), from 26d per lb to I free.

Oysters, fresh, in shell, from 2s per cwt to free. Oatmeal and rolled oats, from -*ld per lb to 2s 6d per 1001b. Hay and chaff, from £1 per ton to free.
