He viewed the famous . temples round Kyoto, and then boated ! down the Hozugawa river, shooting the j frequent hoiling rapids in the eight miles journey to Saga, through a deep ' gorge. People gathered along the banks, which in some places were high and precipitous rocks, trom tar and near, and gave a continuous reception. In the evening the Prince dined with the Mayor of Kyoto, and witnessed a picturuesque cherry dance by some of the daintiest singers in Japan.
