MAWERA v. IMLAY
The Hawera senior team met Imlay at the showgrounds on ba cur day. The game was not up to senior standard, though there were periods when the spectators were keenly interested. About 500 people watched the game. Imlay were outclassed and suffered defeat by 24 points to nil. The visitors were not up to their full strength, only four of the original team being able to make the trip, and two local men were included to make up the fifteen. Th© teams were:
Hawera.—Hughes, Whittington, Robertson. Wilkinson, Walsh, Purcell, At-. kin, Osborne, Fogarty, 0. Murphy, West, Hunt, A. Murphy, Sutherland, Robinson.
Imlay.—Waite, C. Head, Black, Palmer, Hartwill Brown Benson, Baldwin, G. Ross, Chadwick, Phillips (2), Cox, Peterson. The game opened with an attack by Imlay, and when Hawera were penalised about fifteen yards from the lin« it looked as if a score was certain, but Brown's kick went wide of the post. Play came back to midfield, and a series of three-quarter passing rushes by Ha. wera was initiated by Atkin. Offside spoilt these movements, but Hawera continued their attacks, and eventually Atkin made a pretty opening and passed to West, who put in a nice run and scored. Hughes converted. s—o.5 —0. Imlay's play was slow and weak, but occasionally they showed a flash of good form, as when Palmer instituted a good dribbling rush and had the local men busily defending until Robertson relieved and enabled the forwards to carry play back to Imlay's territory. The ball finally reached Wilkinson, who raced over. West failed with the kick at goal. A few minutes later Hawera again scored from a passing bout, Purcell giving Wilkinson another opportunity. Hughes converted, and Hawera had 13 points on the score sheet. Play from then on to half-time was patchy, the Imlay team being unable to work up an effective combination.
In the second spell Purcell was the first of the local men to show up, but his effort was not supported and Imlay broke away 3 Smith putting in a good run which Wilkinson ended. Hawera then resumed their attack, good play by 0. Murphy enabling West to set the backs going. The ball reached Wilkinson, who managed to cross the line though collared. Hughes failed with the kick. Later Imlay had two good chances of scoring, but both failed —Palmer's attempt to pot a goal, and a free kick which Cox was unable to pilot between the uprights. Fast following up by Wilkinson enabled him to gather Hp the ball and outstrip the opposition in a 25-yard sprint. The kick at goal failed. Close play followed close to the visitors' line, and Hunt picked up and darted over. Osborne added the major points, and the game, which was for the most part one-sided, ended 24—0. Mr. F. A. Phelan was the referee.
