RIFLE SHOOTING.

Last Saturday was anything but an ideal shooting day. The weather was I showery till late in the afternoon, when it brightened up considerably, and some of the enthusiasts had *'a good patch." Some good scores were registered, notably those of" Rfmn. D. Roots, with 44 at 300 yds and 46 at 600 yds. Rfmn. j. G. Ritchie finished with a similar ucore, made up of' 47 at 300 yds and 43 lat 600 yds. Rfmn. T. Geary scored 4? at 300 yds, but failed to sustain his effort at 600 yds, whore he only managed to notch 3cf. The Brunette Cup was won by Rfmn. A. E. Gorton. As on the previous Saturday, this young shot scored exceptionally well, and registered his second success this season. In looking back through club records a similar performances to Rfmn. Gorton's cannot be traced. He has so far competed in two competitions and Avon both. Considering that it is less than six months since he took up Ene sport, his success lias Been remarkable, as well as meritorious. The Vice-president's Trophy, which was fired in three series as follows; 10 shots at 300 yds and 500 yds, 10 shots at 500 yds and 600 yds, and 10 shots at 300 yds and 600 yds, was won by Bfmn. D. Scannell with an aggregate of 266 off the rifle, or an average of 44*. . The position of the leaders in the Club Championship remains unchanged. Rfmn. D. Roots still leads Rfmn. Ritchie by three points. The final ten shots will De fired to-day at 600 yds. There is not much* likelihood of the present order fteing disturbed, and on present form Rfmn. Roots should retain his present lead and probably increase it by a few points. I The_competition to-day is also being i counted as the first stage for the Bennett and Sutton Cup, ten shots and an optional sighter at 500 yds rind 600 yds. This handsome and valuable cup was generoiisly presented to the club for competition. The conditions of the competition are that it must be won three times to win it outright. It is at *presen£ hold by Rfmn. Roots, and much keen competition is evident this year for it. _
