DAMAGE IN MIMI DISTRICT

The Mimi district was visited by torrential rain during Wednesday night,' and as a result road communication! yesterday with the country north of Urenui was completely blocked. The ' rain, it is stated, simply teemed for; about six hours, and the various water-, courses became flooded, with, the result' that the bridge on the Mimi-Mokau j road over the Mangamaho river was carried away and numerous slips occurred in the Mimi Valley, making the road impassable. • Mr C. H. Johnson was unable to ' get through with the mail yesterday. l In conversation with, a News repre- • sentative, he stated that even if the' bridge were not gone it would have been impossible to get through, co numerous were the slips along the road in the Mimi Valley, extending from the hillside almost at the entrance of, the valley to as far along as Mr L. Jones' property. The Clifton County chairman (Mr R. H. Pigott) and the engineer (Mr C. F. Dowsett) were on the scene yes- j terday. making arrangements to clear the road, and it is hoped to get the | mail through to-day, Mr Johnson hav-' ing arranged to take it across the j river by boat and transfer it to another motor. —News.
