4 TROTTING. (JJY ' ELECIUPH —PIIEBH ASSOCIATION ) AUCKLAND. Nov. 14. Reharidicaps for the Otahuhu trots are:— Campbell Handicap—Wild Lad 216 yards behind. Tramway Handicap—JSna Bell 60. NOTES AND COMMENTS. j (By Maecenas.) The annual gathering of the Horowhenua Racing Club takes place tomorrow. As the acceptances are good, the racing should be interesting. • Helen Rufus scored in such a decisive manner.at the Waverley meeting that it would' not be surprising to find her again hard to dispose of in the Welter Hack to-morrow. Celmisia has a big load (9.9) in the Levin Hack at Horowhenua, but is so brilliant that one will find it a difficult matter to select one to beat her in the event. The field engaged in the Horowhenua Cup to-morrow is not a strong one, and should Kilrush strip well the public should have little difficulty in selecting a favourite. A large field will possibly star? for ' tho Hokio Hack to-morrow. This will favour Paphian, which is a great beginner. Doucement may be Paphian's most dangerous opponent. Waitea is a youngster which goes very fast over a Bhort course, but does, not stay on very well, but as the opposition to Mr Ballinger's two-year-old is weak Waitea should be favourite. The highest-priced yearling at the salos held in Christchurch last week was the Kilbroney—Taringamutu colt, which cost Mr A. McDonald 750 guineas. A bay colt, which claims Martian— Mary of Argyle as his breeding, was secured by Mr Greenwood at the Kin- ' loch stud sale. This youngster is a full-brother to Sunbird, Ardenvohr, and Esperance, all of which were true stayers and good stake-earners. When brought under the hammer last week Clean Sweep was bought by Mr. Pearson for 825 guineas. At the same sale Endure brought 65 guineas and Warlike 45 guineas. The Sunny Lake—.Equifcas colt offered at auction last week was parsed at 300 ' guineas. This youngster b» n halfbrother to Oratress and Equitable. Despite the success of Absurds stock, the progeny of Martian brought good prices last week. Should Absurd stock continue to fail as stayers, it :ts quite possible that last year's average may not bo reached when the stock froiii Koatanui are sold. j The easy manner in which Rational disposed of Absurdum in the Juvenile j Handicap on Saturday suggests that the Hawera-owned gelding was very ', unlucky in tbe Stewards' Handicap, > and, although Solfanello is credited with having won easily, the subsequent run- I ning of both Rational and Affectation : makes it appear that either of the ' horses named may possibly have beaten ' Sojfanello had they been favoured with an equally good start and run. ' We northerners never classed Winning Hit with Mermin, Rational, The Hawk. Thespian, Absurdum. and Tamatete, but it now appears as if we were somewhat biassed. As a two-year-old : Winning Hit ran a dozen times, of which he won three, was four times second, and once thirdV The son of Autumnus won the Middle Park Plate, and was also successful in the Champagne Stakes at Riccarton. In the last named race Mermin sustained the only defeat opposite his name last season, j Last season Winning Hit won £1720. but th:s season he has already won £2450 for that good sportsman Sir G. Clifford. • j
