(By Telegraph—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. lhe Minister of Immigration gave a reassurng reply to a question from the member for Egmont regarding 1000 immigrants who recently arrived 111 New Zealand. Mr. Nosworthy said that the whole number had secured accommodation and work, and that the the Immigration Department, with the assistance of persona who had nominated imigrante, could similarly place the next batch due during the coming week-end. He thought that it waa a matter for congratulation that Mew Zealand could absorb the newcomers bo effectively. MILK TESTING POWERS. Mr 0. Hawken (Egmont) asked the Minister of Agriculture to introduce a measure on the lines of the Act, giving powers to officers of the Department to test milk and cream in dairy factories and other places. Mr Nosworthy replied that this matter is being gone into, especially from the point of view of determining the extent to which conditions prevail which would render legislation necessary. Enquiries are also being made as to what is being done in other countries, apart from Ontario, in tho shape of legislation of the kind suggested. LOCAL BODIES' OVERDRAFTS. Mr Hawken asked the Minister of Internal Affairs whether he will amend the law which gives powers to local authorities to borrow money on overdraft. It is evident that local authorities are using the powers granted to borrow on overdraft moneys which should be raised as a permanent loan, the effect being that in times of emergency they have depleted their resources to such an extent as to be unable to carry on the necessary works for the relief of unemployed. Mr Downie Stewart replied that the j question of introducing legislation on the lines suggested by the member is at present under consideration.
