(From Our Own Correspondent).There was a large assemblage,of.farmers and citizens of Manaia at the Oddfellows' Hall on Tuesday nigtrt. The object of the gathering was & farewell smoke concert and presentation to Mr "Alex McCracken, local reVreSentativo of the Loan and Mercantile, who has been transferred to Hatfisra after a residenda';*^ Manaia, ot <iver thirteen years;*•__&£* McCracken has been a very popular citizen and always- taken a keen interest in. sport", and was ever ready to give his Assist-: i*J_o§ to^iny deserving cause, locally ot 'otherwise. On behalf of the friends of the £_est.he eulogised the sterling qualities of Mr McCracken as-a citizen.and _. business man. and referred to the good work he had done on several occasions during his residence in Manaia. A splendid evening was spent and concluded with the singing of ■ *'Auld Lang Syne and three cheers for the guest: The many-, friends of Mrs Taylor, senr., of # Manaia, will regret to bear that she is seriously-ill at present,-and hope for her speedy recovery. The euchre party and dance in aid of theJFrre Brigade uniform fund, held on Wednesday night, was well attended. Mr- P. Tarrant won the gentlemen's prize- and Mrs R. Donald tbe iadies.
