The Prime Minister (Mr. Massey) left Vancouver by the Niagara on Saturday for Auckland (says a cable message). The Niagara iK due at Auckland on September 30. Tho Hon. O. J. Anderson, who has been in a Wellington private hospital for several weeks, is reported to be making better progress after another operation. Among those successful at the recent music examinations, Trinity College intermediate division (piano), held afc New Plymouth Convent was Miss A. Loader, of Hawera, who gained 83 marks (honours). Mr. J. F. Buddie, a well known Auckland citizen, died on Tuesday last. Ho was the fourth son of tho late Rev. Thomas Buddie, Methodist missionary in Auckland's early days, and was at ono time in the service of the Bank of Now Zealand. Our Opunake correspondent writes: — Mr. W. Coon, recently appointed headmaster of the Opunake State school, has arrived, and commences duty on the 13th inst, Mr. Coon was formerly on the staff of the Otago .Education Board. The Rev. J. Bell and Mffs. Bell, who are returning to the mission in North China, left Havera by the. m&il Cram this morning, en route to Auckland. The Rev. Archibald E. Hunt, ministor of the Cambridge Terrace (Wellington) Congregational Church, and secretary of the Congregational Union of New Zealand, has tendered his resignation, with a view to entering-the ministry of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., who has been relieving magistrate in Taranaki, has been appointed permanently to the Taranaki district. He will leave for Dunedin towards the end of this week to arrange his private affairs, and will be absent for about ten days, during which time Mr. H. W. Bundle, of Auckland, will preside over Magistrate's Court sittings in this district. The appointment of Mr. W. R. Russell as handicapper to the Stratford Jockey Club will be [received with satisfaction by Mr. Russell's man v triends throughout the province. Mr. Russell acted, as handicaiyper for the second da} of the Stratford Club'a meeting lasi year, and his work was evidently well received by the club. To follow in th< footsteps of such an experienced handi capper aa Mr. J. Henrys is an honour and Mr. Russell hag rightly reoeivec many congratulations from his friends on his success. News has been received of the deatl , at Russell, Bay of Islands, of Dr. B. M. Moorhouse, a widely-known Canter bury resident. The deceased was borr in South Canterbury in 1859. On completing his education at Christ's College he went to England and studied at the medical schools of the Edinburgh and London Universities, gaining hit medical degrees. He returned tc New Zealand and practised in Christchurch for many years. He enjoyed a high reputation as a professional man, and for a long period waa one of the examiners at the Medical School in Dunedin. He gave up practice a few years ago, but acted on occasions as surgeon on Home-going boats. i For the last few winters it had been , his practice to reside at Russell. Dr. ,Moorhouse was a born.naturalist, a good shot, and a keen and scientific i angler. He had a profound grasp of the .scientific principle* of acclimatisa. ; tion, and as an authority on that department of the work he had few, if any, equals in New Zealand. He was | one of the most valued members of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, 1 and much of the important work achieved by that society in the past was due to. his inspiration and influence. He was a keen supporter of the. policy for the introduction of suitable game and fish in New Zealand, and his views were always readily accepted by other acclimatisation experts.
