POLITICAL ECONOMY
HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS TO BE SAVED.
8Y CABLE—PBESB ASSOCIATION-rorYBIGHT LONDON. Sept. 8.
Sir E. Geddes' business men's economy committee has found ways of saving hundreds of millions in the next estimates.
The committee's main recommendation is the abolition of labour exchanges. They admit some- local machinery will be necessary while the Government continues to pay unemployment insurance, but believe it oan be done simply and cheaply. The committee has made startling recommendations for economising lin Mesopotamia and Palestine, but this will involve an important consideration of Cabinet policy. Other recommendations are drastic economies in expenditure oh the army and nayal dockyard*. It is hoped to economise further by reducing the cost and the size of the Civil Service, though, 'ilfficulties iva.v be expected to be encountered.
