MAN IMPALED ON A CROWBAR.

i . . GISBORNE, August 15. Leslie Jeffers, aged 21, employed on road construction at Whareata, dropped a crowbar with which he was working on top of a bank twelve feet above the road. The crowbar stood upright in the soft earth. Jeffers slipped down the bank and became empaled on the bar, which went right through his body, entering a thigh and coming out at the shoulder blade. It required the efforts of two strong men to remove the bar. Jeffers was brought to town to hospital, where he succumbed on Sunday afternoon.
