A cable from Paris reports that Sarah Earnhardt. the famous actress, is seriously ill.

The health of Mr Newton King has shown improvement and he was able to leave Christchurch on Saturday night for Wellington, where he will stay a few days before returning to New Plymouth.

Mr Justice Salmond is to preside over the New Plymouth Court sessions, which opens to-morrow, and will arrive by this evening's mail train.

When Parliament meets the portfolio of Finance will be taken by Mr Downie Stewart until Mr Massey c return, as it is. necessary for this portfolio to be in the hands of a member ofxthe House of Representatives while Parliament is in session. Sir Francis Bell will take -charge of Internal Affairs in the meantime.

The news will be received with regret by many people in Hawera of the death of Mr Samuel McQuiston, who some years ago was a resident of the town. He will be remembered as on the staff of Gibsons Ltd. at Hawera and Patea, The Ballymena Telegraph of June 4 "records his death at sea on May 22, en route from New Zealand. There are, however, no details of the cause of death.
