ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

(By Partick Thistle.*)

Being a"soccer enthusiast and critic, I would like to make a few remarks in regard to the recent Ha-wera-New Plymouth match, played at New Plymouth. I was greatly disappointed when I heard that Messrs Butler.. Howarth. and Pickering could not make the trip; still, the Hawera eleven had a good win and played a better game than on any previous occasion, and if the.ir combination is as good when they play Wanganui as it was at New Plymouth, then I think the Wanganui team will bo up against a hard proposition. As far as the inside of the game was concerned, it was fast and clean, both sides playing in a real sporting manner. Commenting on the Hawera players, Barker (the right full back) was not to be

beaten; he was calm and knew what to do with the ball when he received it. Priestly, the left back, also played an excellent game. . E. Jones (captain) played a much better_ game at right half than he played in the forwards, and Pooch is Pooch as far as centre half is concerned. . F. Jones played a good game- as, left half. Now the dashing forwards. Piper (outside right), Horsburgh (inside right), and Brown (centre forward) played a fine combination, ganie, and if the selectors could find a left wing as good as the ■fight, then Hawera (would jhave a good solid team. Reid (inside left) also played a fine game, notwithstanding the fact that he allowed himself to play the "offside game" once or twice. Personally, I would like to see the selectors try out the following team: Goal, Butler; full backs, Barker # and Pickering; half-backs, E. Jones, Pooch, and Howarth; outside right, Piper; inside right. Horsburgh; centre forward, Brown; inside left, F. Jones; outside- left, Nicholl. This w-ould be a very strong-team and would be bard ,to beat.
