TOWN BOARD MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Manaia Town Board was held on Thursday night. Present: Messrs J. G. Craig (chair), A. H. Christie, G. Edwards, L. W. Neilson, J. Hickey, N. C. Innes, J. J. Meldon.
Correspondence was received from Mr M. Barron, resigning position as poundkeeper. His resignation was accepted with regret. It was decided to call for applications for the position. The Taranaki Local Bodies' Association forwarded a recommendation that wages be reduced by one shilling per day.—lt was decided to leave the letter on the table-
A letter was received from the Town Board's engineer, Mr J. Sturrock, re quotes of pipes and wire.—Received.
The State Advances Office wrote stating that their office would be remitting £1000 shortly for water and drainage schemes.
The clerk reported on the repairs needed for the Town Hall—Left in the hands of the Hall Committee with power to act.
Mr T. Walsh wrote asking for particulars of the Board's requirements re the intake and coure of water pipes in connection with the water scheme.— The information is to be suppliedThe foreman's report was submitted and was adopted. 0 It was decided to advertise that Mr Bastin had been appointed town inspector.
Mr Edwards suggested that concrete kerbing might be constructed in some of the streets which are without this convenience.
Soldiers' Memorial.—Mr Christie asked whether it was the intention of the Patriotic Society to erect the monument right alongside the electric light post- He thought the Boa.d should shift the post.—lt was resolved to write to the Electric Light Company asking them to remove the post, as in its present place it would spoil the appearance of the monument. The practice of sending motcr vehicles into the town to pick up footballers was referred to Mr. Christie, who said that on this account the Globe Motor Company should be licensed under the Board's by-laws.—lt was resolved to write to, the company requiring them to obtain a license from the Board.
The price .of copies of the by-laws, which will be for sale at the Board's office, was fixed at 3s 6d.
MANAIA STATE SCHOOL
A special meeting-of the above school committee was held on Wednesday evening. Present: Messrs T. A. Bridge (chair),' Mrs. Patterson, and Messrs P. F. Hammonds, Andrews, Dakers, and Bennett.
The chairman ,said the new sthool would soon .be completed, and he thought it was desirable to give the children a special treat to celebrate the opening.
"Mrs. Patterson kindly donated a flag for the school. *
It was decided to ask Mr. P. J. H. White, chairman of the Education Board, and also the members of the Board, together with Messrs Hawken and Dixon, M.P.'s. to open the school, the day to be a school holiday. Mr. Hewlett," headmaster, said the children were anxious to have sports, and, if possible, provide some amusement for the parents anu public. Mr. Hammonds stated that he was preparing a- silver key for the opening and wished to give prizes for children's ..essays on the new school. He thought the committee shou'd have in view the beautifying of the grounds. The matter of canvassing for funds for the opening of the school was left to the ladies' committee, to which the .following were appointed: Mesdames Gamlin, Patterson, Dakers, -0. Bell, Hammonds, Andrews, Snowden, Sprool, and D. Mitchell.
Mr. Hammonds was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for offer of prizes for essay work.
