ANGLO-JAPANESE ALLIANCE.
STATEMENT SHORTLY.
CHINESE OBJECTIONS^
»T CA-H-E-PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPYEIGII'i LONDON, July 7In the House of Commons, Mr -Xloyd George stated that he hoped to make a statement on the AngloJapanese Alliance on Monday. A preXMture declaration would interfere "with the success of the negotiations now proceeding. The'interval between the general and. the detailed argumenc <m the Anglo-Japanese Alliance is being occupied by experts in fra_).»g -a draft of the modifications to be submitted when the matter is resumed. It is stated on good authority ih'x* the military phases' are being qualified mthout destroying their effect!-enoss It is understood that views are also I»ing exchanged with Amsrica, indicating the nature of the proposals which there is reason to believe are likely to be acceptable to Washington. If so, and if Japan agrees, all the interested parties will be in accord, and Mr Meighan's opposition will be withdrawn. It is too early to say whether the obstacles are disappearing, but official circles opinion is distinctly hopeful that a satisfactory entente settlement will be reached.
There is strong opposition by China's representative in London against the renewal of the alliance. The case for China is being ably put before the delegates to the conference, the claim being that China should be represent«d with other Powers at a round-table conference to discuss the whole situation.
