The King and Queen of the Belgians have arrived in London on an official visit.
Mr James H. B.'CoaTes nas resigned his seat on the board of the National Bank of' New Zealand and has accepted an appointment as honorary director. Mr Arthur Myers has joined the board.
A cable from London announces the death of Lord Eustace Cecil, second son of the second Marquis of Salisbury, at the age of 87. He was a railway and company director and sat in the House of Commons for various periods.
Mr R. Smart, who has held a responsible position in the Wellington branch of the Bank of New Zealand during the last six years, has retired on superannuation, after a service" of over forty years. He joined the bank in Tauranga (Bay of Plenty) _in 1878. He is well-known in Patea and Manaia-

Mr J. Fow, an old resident of Hawera and Normanby, and now Mayor of Hamifton, is on a visit to Hawera and is staying with Mr Russell Hardley, of Victoria street. Mr Fow is vice-president of the Hamilton Show, and the purpose of his visit is to see the Winter Show and make inquiries with regard to Taranaki roads and town improvements with a view to putting the information gained to some" use in Hamilton.
Mr R. Sage (secretary of the Chamfer of Commerce) has received advice from the Controller of Customs that Mr M. J. McGahey has been appointed Collector of Customs at Patea- Mr McGahey will frequently visit Hawera for the purpose of passing Customs entries for the town and district.
At the Taranaki Land Board meeting last week, a letter was received from G. H. Bullard, formerly Commissioner of Crown Lands of this district, but now of the Canterbury district, expressing appreciation of a presentation of an entree dish from the local Lands and Survey ■Office staff and members of the Land Board. Owing to Mr Bullard taking his departure during the Easter vacation a,n4 being unable to return here for a short visit as originally hoped for, the. presentation had to be made at Christchurch. —News. .
Last evening at the Salvation Army , Citadel, a large number, considering the bad weather, met to say good-bye to Captain and Mrs Friberg and family, the popular officers of the local Salvation Army, who have been in charge for the past eighteen months, the treasurer being in the chair. The following spoke in glowing terms of the work of the captain:— Messrs Hurrell ; Badcock, Dowdle, Yearbury, Stebbing, Corkin, Vost, and Mrs Anderson and Miss Lane. The captain, in reply, thanked all for what they had said, stating he only did his duty. The captain has proved ihimself to be a keen worker. The following contributed items: Mesdames Stebbing and Glover and Mr Dowdle, after which supper was partaken of. The new officers, two lassies, Adjutant Wheeler and Ensign Marshall, arrive on Thursday to assume command' of the Hawera corps-
