FIRST DAY
The Egmont Racing Club's winter meeting opened this morning under rather threatening weather conditions. Previous showers and a shower which came over just as the first race was sorting made the track somewhat on the holding side. There is a large crowd present. Results:

Admiral Codrington was first to show out, (but the lead was soon taken by Awake, who kept in front and won comfortably foy two lengths. Top Dog, who was going strongly entering the straight, got up in time to snatch second place from Admiral Codrington 'by a head. Super Six was fourth. Peggy Paul, who .previous, to the preliminary unseated her rider, repeated the same thing at the- post and was pulled out ot the race. Time, 1.4. Hunt), Belle Noire 9.0 (jDillamore). | tfathlin was first to begin, closely ■followed 'by Demagogue and Lord Nagar. Passing the stand the order was Lord Nagar, Rathlin, Munition, First Line. This order was maintained round the back. Lord Nagar entered the straight well in the lead, RathhnJ and All Talk being next in order, with Munition next. The leader went on and won by five lengths, two lengths separating Rathlin and All Talk, First Line was fourth. Multive fell. Time, 3.26 2-5. Winner trained by W. Hawthorn. From a good start John Bunny and Battletide took the lead, with Daloopin and Otaura Kid next. The two lastnamed came to grief at the first hurdle. Passing; the stand John Bunny was in the lead, with Silent Dick and Vigilo in that order. At the five furlong pot Battletide joined the leaders and soon ran into second place but John Bivnny won comfortably by five lengths, with Vagilo 'next, and Silent Dick a length away third. Polthogue took the lead up the back from Sir Fisher, Khartoum. Gang 'Awa and Slowcoach. A little further "on Mattock joined issue with Polthogue and Khartoum. The fence at the bend brought j Khartoum down, and Slowcoar-h lost ground through interference. Mattock was leading by three lengths at the bend, with Ngakanui and Slowcoach next. The second to last obstacle proved fatal to Sir Fisher. Mattock safely negotiated the last fence and stalling off a determined challenge by Slowcoach won nicely by one and a half lengths with Ngakanui three lengths further back third. Luke was fourth T;ire o.oiH.

I Loved One was first to show out, next in order being Connemara, Hori and Big Push. Loved One was first to turn for home, with Connemara handy. Straightening up for home leading into the straight Velociform came with a great rush, and won a good race by half a length, the same distance sepa.rating the next two. Time, 1.5. (Winner trained by H. Rayner.) Mcßae Memorial —Malaga 1, Kareao 2, Marqueteur 3. Scratched: Cruc«lle, Stork. Won by a length, two lengths separating second and third. Time, 2.13|.
