THE TARIFF BILL. *
AMENDMENTS BY SENATE
BJ CABIiE-^RESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGH* ' ■■' (Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 10. The position of the Tariff Bill is becoming anomalous.
The Senate passed amendments putting an 8 per cent. h>und duty on butter, ;12 per cent, per dozen on. eggs, and 25 per cent, ad valorem on cheese, i but.the Opposition Democrats still ex-j pect to defeat the measure when it comes to th e vote. ; There ds a rumour that twelve Democrats have agreed to 1 join themselves to the Republicans in i order to pass the Bill, but Senator Un-' derwood declared that President Wil"! son will unquestionably veto the mea- j sure, even if it passes. The Repub-1 licans are now attempting to build up I a sufficient majority to pas s the Bill, j In the event of President Wilson ap- j plying a veto, but owing to failure to pass the closure, any Senator can talk the measure to death. ■ The session has hardly'more than ten days before it, ' and must adjourn sine die, so that the fate of the measure is uncertain. j
